How Many Bricks Do I Need for a Wall?

Understand wall area, bricks per square meter, running bond layout, and how to estimate mortar — with a link to the visual brick calculator.

Use with our Brick Wall Calculator.

Brick estimates combine wall dimensions, brick size, and mortar joints. Counting “by eye” on site is risky — a simple area-based method gets you close enough for ordering, then add waste for cuts and breakage.

The basics

Wall area

Wall area = width × height

Standard modular bricks with typical joints often land around 50–60 bricks per square meter (≈5–6 per square foot), but always confirm with your brick spec sheet.

Example: garden wall 3 m × 1 m

Area first

3 × 1 = 3 m² of wall. At ~55 bricks/m² → about 165 bricks before waste. With 10% waste → ~180 bricks.

Mortar and layout

Running bond (offset rows) is the default for strength and appearance. Mortar volume depends on joint thickness — bagged pre-mix labels list coverage per m² of wall.
